I really like the part that talked about not "surprising" our students. A fair number of kids struggle with anxiety, especially test anxiety. Our jobs as teachers is to help our students succeed and to be prepared for our test. This way we can analyze where each student needs help.
I agree, Maria! It always frustrated me as a student when a teacher gave a pop quiz without preparing the class and/or without giving us a timeline on when we should master the material. A unit plan can help students know exactly when they should master the concepts. While I don't currently give my students an entire unit plan at a time, I do have an "Important Dates" board where students can see when they need to be prepared to show me their level of mastery (often in the form of a short quiz or writing piece). I hope to get to the point of giving students a unit plan outline soon!
